Plowing the back 40

There is nothing quite like taking a bit of earth and making it grow...to borrow from A Secret Garden. I finally got out and weeded the garden space in our back yard, turned the soil and planted the seeds. The rain broke for a single day amidst a two week long drizzle, and I pounced.

I don't know why, but planting my own garden is something I've wanted to do forever, as soon as we lived in a place where there was any workable soil whatsoever. Well, now I have my chance. And I am taking advantage of the opportunity to see what color my thumb is. My hope is to be able to eat something I grew myself. Truthfully, I'll be happy if I get one single edible morsel out of the ground. We don't get lots of sunlight in some parts of our backyard. But darnit, I'm going to try.

I planted a myriad of fruit & vegetables and some flowers in the spots that don't get any sunlight. (Maybe I could genetically engineer some full-shade growing strawberries or something.) Carrots, peas, lettuce, tomatoes, watermelons, asparagus and some herbs. I planted a little of each just to see what would come of it. I don't even like tomatoes, but that's what you grow in a vegetable garden. I don't make the rules. Just ask Ouiser Boudreaux. (I definitely had to look up how to spell that...not how I would have guessed)

So, I did something green. I feel like a natural woman now. Quite au natural. I had to scrub my fingernails four times to get the dirt out. I think my desire to dig around in the ground must be something that God put in us. You know, as keepers of creation. Adam suggested that maybe I'm just part hobbit.

Highlight of my week: Getting the garden planted, of course!
